This started as a joke about building QR codes out of the pile of poo emoji, and the joke is still in the style menu. Plain squares are the default because they scan on more hardware and print smaller. In poo mode the piles are drawn only over the data modules: the three corner squares, the timing lines and the alignment markers stay solid, because a scanner finds a code by measuring those, and emoji-shaped corners make a code that no scanner can find at all.

Turn off your internet connection and reload. This page still works, because there is nothing to talk to.
